His Spirit is Soaring Free :: Personal Narrative, Personal Essay

The cold, steel bars of the headboard pressed painfully into my back, and I could no longer feel my legs. Yet I sat motionless, his head heavy on my collarbone, afraid the slightest movement would disturb him. I softly kissed the thin wisps of hair on top of his head as I cradled his frail, emaciated body. Every day spent with him was precious; he would soon be gone. In those silent pre-dawn hours, the harsh lighting and sterile hospital smell faded away as my mind wandered unrestrained, exploring unknown areas and probing into ideas which challenged my Southern upbringing, and returned with new knowledge which was to forever change my life. "Woo," as everyone knew him, loved God, family and the outdoors. He was always daring, climbing to the highest branches of any tree. When he was five years old, he grabbed the manes of our untamed horses to hoist himself onto their backs for wild, frenzied rides. At the age of nine he began a love affair which was to last his entire life—he earned to hunt. His truck roaring into the driveway invariably disrupted the entire household. The children jockeyed for position as they ran to the door laughing and screaming. They knew he would have Tootsie Rolls and Hershey Kisses in his pockets. As soon as his tall, lanky frame filled the doorway, strawberry blonde ringlets bouncing past his shoulders, they wrapped their little arms around his legs, forcing him to drag them into the room with him. He was always willing to play their favorite games, no matter how tired he was. One wanted to wrestle; his long, tapered fingers would dance across the child's ribs eliciting delighted squeals. Another wanted to play "Chin Music." Woo's beard tickled as he blew "raspberries" on their cheeks and necks. Many mornings at daybreak he stopped by for a cup of coffee and quiet conversation. He gestured animatedly when he talked; sparkling azure eyes belied the seriousness of any situation. Hung across his shoulder was the tattered, brown hunting pouch he refused to part with, his curls escaping the orange knit cap he always wore hunting. On those mornings he smelled of crisp, cold air and wild game. The morphine cocktails he was given on demand had stilled his work-callused hands and dulled his eyes.

Free Essays - To Kill a Mockingbird - What is a Classic? :: Free Essay Writer

What is a classic? One definition given by the dictionary is: having lasting significance or worth; enduring. When examined closely we can discover what makes the novel unique and memorable. There are many important messages in Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, which make it memorable to the reader. The main message in this novel is about racism, how people around you, not just parents have a strong influence on you when you are growing up, and how rumors and misjudging can make a person look bad. Judging other people without knowledge of the facts is also a common occurrence. Nearly the whole last half of the book is about racism. The attitude of the whole town is that Tom Robinson, because he is black and,"†¦all Negroes lie,†¦all Negroes are basically immoral beings,†¦all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women†¦"(Lee 207), will be found guilty regardless of how good a case Atticus makes for him. There was substantial amount of evidence that suggests his innocence. Even the prosecution's two witnesses' stories contradicted each other. The jury did not give a guilty verdict it gave a racist verdict. Not a verdict based on fact, but a verdict based on the color of a man's skin. This is important because the author was not making this racism up; it was what it was like in those times. She is trying to show how ignorant and blind people can be just because of differences between them, as well as how society treats racial minorities. During the book Scout and Jem are at an age were people around them greatly affect their thoughts, views and ideas about the world. Although Atticus tried to raise them to treat Negroes as equals, people around them affected their views on them. A good example is when Dill questioned the seemingly rude way which Mr. Gilmer treated Tom Robinson. Scout replied by saying, "†¦after all he's just a Negro." (Lee 201). She believes it to be acceptable. This is not something her father put in her head but people in her town. The same also happens in the black community. When Atticus asks Calpurnia to watch his children for him while he is out, Calpurnia accepts and takes the children with her to church, a church for black people. When she arrives with the children, they are greeted kindly except by a few people. These people use the same reason as in the last example as to why they should not be there, because they are white.

Moral Degradation Essay

I think all would consider this fact to be tenable that nowadays more youth and youngsters are involved in crime and hence an extreme phase of social illness is undeniable and inescapable. You can’t just deny this fact. It’s all in the statistics. I mean it is facts and figures that we are talking about; black and white. Nothing remains to hide and no where to run. We are in a reality to face it. Some would debate before they say it moral degradation. However, if they do so you have enough reason to ask them about what morality constitutes and how he or she would label this new unexpected development. Moreover, the increase in juvenile cases recent months is shocking and the news of students killing one another can be seen a chronic disease. Young generation with whom we are used to dream for the future of the country is having a great contribution to this new specter. From ogling, winking, passing comments in the form of sexual innuendos, to touching, groping, ‘eveteasing’, stalking, sending lewd text messages, ‘prank’ calls, display of pornography, threatening and intimidation, acid attacks, and unwanted ‘love’ proposals. Compared to back then, things do not happen like this. Is there any doubt that more youngsters nowadays are involved in social crimes and problems? The disrespectful attitude carried out by youths and students is very much common nowadays if you were to compare again to the last couple of years. I mean what is wrong with youngsters and youths nowadays? Why are they acting in such a way? There is no fear and tear to say it is kind of social moral breakdown and it is taking its shape through such abnormal and undesired manner. Government and society has nothing to do with it or unwilling to do it? May be the last one is closer to the truth than the former one. However, it is the failure of the state to ensure the moral growth of the young girls

Loss of Innocence in To Kill a Mockingbird Essay

â€Å"Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square.† This environment as Scout Finch accurately describes is not the best or conducive place for young children, loud noises, and games. In the same way as the children, the adults of the novel played games that came from their imaginations, and they themselves are the ones who provided the fear for everyone. As most children do Jem, Scout, and their newly-found friend Dill find amusements to make the days pass by with excitement. When they first met Dill at the beginning, the day’s play is in the backyard. The implication is that it becomes routine for them to play and that each day brings a different experience. When Dill joins them in their daily adventures, they begin to create more elaborate activities. Many days they spent improving the treehouse, and acting out parts of plays by Oliver Victor Appleton, and Edgar Rice Burroughs. There games of Tom Swift the Rover Boys, and The Ghost are the sources of their pleasures for hours and days upon end. Once these games seem rot and overplayed they decide to make Boo Radley come out. Thus the â€Å"Boo Radley†, plays begin. These plays are simply for amusement in the end, they teach Jem, Scout, and Dill lessons about respect, courage, and understanding. The â€Å"Boo†, games begin with a simple dare that Jem has to carry out in order to gain respect from his sister and friend. Scout and Jem both learn about courage through the first Boo game they invented by testing their levels of fear. The game has turned into a dangerous, scary expedition that leaves all three of them shaken. Boo’s unspoken, unseen presence at the fire put him in a new light in Jem’s and Scout’s eyes. Yet again, they see reality and their games slowly fading and losing their meaning. The burning house and Boo’s reappearance show Jem and Scout more pieces of reality and causing them to push that much closer to reality and the adult world and that much more of their innocence and childhood is lost. As the trial crept closer, Scout and Jem each have to test their self-control in accepting or ignoring the multitudes of â€Å"nigger-lover† comments coming their way, by adults as well as children. Scout ends up losing all control when she beats up her cousin Francis, for testing her patience by criticising others. Though Scout doesn’t totally understand her mistake until her uncle Jack, punishes and guides Scout to realization. Jem, of his own fault, has to read to Mrs. Dubose every day and eventually he learns an important lesson. Jem and Scout learn about death and they gain an understanding for the type of person Mrs. Dubose is when they see how her views on life have an effect on her death. The adult games have been going on for a while but Scout and Jem are just beginning to see the games evolving. The most difficult matter for Jem and Scout to understand soon comes to be the trial. Though they have been faced with ignorant people calling them â€Å"nigger-lovers†, they haven’t truly had a full understanding of the slang term until the trial is upon them. Scout, Jem, and Dill experience a faint taste of the adult’s games’ flavor, watching from afar as the mob of common men around Maycomb County gather around Atticus, threatening his and Tom’s lives. Scout still in her innocence, breaks the crowd by recognizing Mr. Cunningham and she, proceeds to praise his son Walter without thought to the fact that Mr. Cunningham realizes that he is a father, not just part of a nameless mob, and, in a sense, he â€Å"walks around in Atticus’s skin† for a moment. The individualizing Scout has done humanizes the originally dehumanized mob and ends the threat to many lives at stake. Scout does not realize the extent of her actions until later on and the understanding raises her up a level of maturity. The game that the men are playing puts lives at risk and shows Scout that adults play with strange sets of rules. She reaches an understanding in the jailhouse scene that still continues to push her into the adult world.

Macro Environment Factors

Introduction The purpose of this report is to demonstrate an understanding of the marketing macro environment. The proposed research question was: Identify the macro environmental factors and discuss the impact this macro environmental factors will have on the industry or organizations involved.Firstly, this report will summaries the article, identify and explain the issues written in article. Followed is the definition and explain of macro environmental factors involved. Then the report topic will moving to the industry concerned and have a discussion of the impact that this macro environment factors will have on the industry. Finally there is a short conclusion highlighting the main points of this report. 2. 0 Summaries The article comes from DOWJONES mainly discussed some specialists’ standpoints of the change of Aussie dollar’s exchange rate and the reason of this fluctuate. In addition, this article analyzed the situation of those industries which can be affected by these economic environment factors. According to this article, tight monetary policy may be used causing by worldwide inflation. With the dropping and down of the interest rate, many industries may be effected directly, such as manufacturing industry, real estate industry and tourism industry. (Webb, Richard. 2011) The reason the article is being written is to show the change of the economic environment and give information to those people who want to understand the external marketing environment, such as marketers.Unless marketing managers understand the external environment, the organization cannot intelligently plan for the future. (Lamb,Charles et al. ,2009) For example, marketers come form real estate industry must scanning the macro-economic environment because macro-economic factors such as inflation, interest rates, and exchange rates impact on mortgage affordability and the real value of mortgage repayments over time. ( Boamah, Nicholas. Addai, 2010) 3. 0 Macro environment factorsThe external marketing environment consists of sociocultural, economic, technological, political and legal, and competitive variables. ( Lamb,Charles et al. ,2009) This article mainly discussed the situation of inflation, which is one of the economic environment factors. Inflation is a general rise in prices without a corresponding increase in wages, which results in decreased purchasing power. ( Lamb,Charles et al. ,2009) According to the article, there are diverse views on where the Aussie is heading, and this direction is critical for interest rates. In the worst case, Michael Workman predicted that later in the year where the local currency will be falling sharply at the same time the price of the manufactured goods we import by the container-shipload form China continues to rise. † (Webb, Richard. 2011) As mentioned, the manufacturing industry may face the raising price of those goods import form other countries because the falling of local currency. The second po int is Reserve Bank of Australia may increase interest rate to cut down the influence of inflation. That would take the home mortgage rates higher at the same time, which means people must pay more interests to the bank to get the loan. Then the real estate industry will be affected directly. Another industry will be influenced is tourism industry. With the higher currency price, people tend to go for an overseas holiday. The local tourism is being decimated. The tourism industry is also involved in the competitive environment. ( Webb, Richard. 2011) 4. 0 Industry involved In this article, three main industries are concerned: manufacturing industry, real estate industry and tourism industry. 5. 0 Impact of the factorsAs the discussion above in 3. 0, these industries are all affected by the inflation. In time of low inflation, business seeking to increase their profit margins can do so only by increase their efficiency. If they significantly increase price, no one will purchase their goods or services. In higher inflationary times, marketers use a number of pricing strategies to cope, and must be aware that inflation causes consumers either to build up or diminish their brand loyalty. Inflation pressures consumers to make more economical purchases, while still attempting to maintain their standard of living. (Lamb,Charles et al. 2009) From the article, the Australia local manufacturing industry was suffering as imports become extremely competitive and our exports more expensive. As same as the manufacturing industry, the local tourism industry also faced the international competitors. The original factor of this situation is the negative economic environment. Followed the inflation, the Reserve Bank of Australia tend to carry out the tight fiscal policy to control the economic environment. So numbers of experts indicated that interest rate would increase. With the increase of interest rate, the price of currency may tend to higher.High record of currency will le ad to different situation in different area. For customers, this will be a good chance to buy import goods and services. But for local industries, marketing managers must try to collect and evaluate environmental information and then creating marketing strategies to cope with inflation. (Lamb,Charles et al. ,2009) 6. 0 Conclusion The mainly factor of these three industries is economic environment; other factors also play a significant role in these industries, such as political and legal environment and competitive environment. These factors affect marketing together.Reference list Boamah, Nicholas. Addai. (2010). The impact of the macro-economic environment on institutional housing finance in Ghana. Analysis of Colours and Human Response Towards User Dining Experiences

Chapter 1.0 Introduction THE WHY, WHAT, AND HOW OF AN ANALYSIS OF COLOURS AND HUMAN RESPONSE TOWARDS USER DINING EXPERIENCE IN MODERN KOPITIAM. 1.1 What is Colour? We all live in a universe where coloring material plays an of import function in our mundane life. Colour affects us in every facet of life. Everything we can see has a coloring material. Colour surrounds us, in our places, work, in nature, in infinite ; it is cosmopolitan were everything has a coloring material. Colour, or the construct of coloring material, can be approached from different subjects and different positions as we see because it is really diverse such as from cognizing that a fruit is mature to eat, to understanding how color can impact our tempers and how does the receiver really response to it. Colour is the belongings possessed by an object, infinite, or surfaces that produces different esthesiss on the oculus as a consequence of the manner the object reflects or emits visible radiation and how does the oculus recognizes while the encephalon interprets. ( hypertext transfer protocol: //www.colourtherapyhealing.com/colour/ ) Colour is merely light of different wavelengths and frequences and visible radiation is merely one signifier of energy that we can really see that is made up from photons surrounded by electromagnetic moving ridges of energy of which coloring material is merely a little portion. Each coloring material has its ain belongingss with its ain wavelength and frequence that forms the seeable spectrum of coloring material as we see it, which consist of seven chief colorss: violet, anil, blue, green, xanthous, orange and ruddy. The retinas in our eyes have 3 types of coloring material receptors in the signifier of cones. We can really merely detect three of these seeable colorss – ruddy – blue and green. These colorss are called linear primaries. It is our encephalons that interprets and mixed the three detected linear primaries: ruddy, bluish and green to make all of the other colors we see. The wavelength and frequence of visible radiation we see, besides influences the coloring material we see. Colour is made up of different wavelength and frequences with each coloring material has its ain peculiarly wavelength and frequence. Each coloring material can be measured in units of rhythms or moving ridges per second. The seven colorss of the spectrum all have changing wavelength and frequences ensuing different reading by the encephalon affects the manner human response towards colorss such as, ruddy is at the lower terminal of the spectrum and has a higher wavelength but lower frequence to that of Violet at the top terminal of the spectrum which has a lower wavelength and higher frequence. Hypothesis 1: Different types of coloring material used will impact the consumer’s perceptual experience and degree of satisfaction in modern kopitiam. Hypothesis 2: Different types of coloring material used will impact the consumer’s behaviour in modern kopitiam? 1.2 What Is Colour Psychology? How Does it Affect Human Response? Since coloring material is portion of our mundane life it is besides a portion of many scientific disciplines — – for illustration, natural philosophies, coloring material theory, and art as it can be introduced in assorted ways. The artist’s attack to color might be different from the physicist’s or the psychologist’s — – although the creative person is closer to the psychologist than he thinks. I would wish to present coloring material to you from the position point of psychological science. ( Mahnke 1996, p6 ) The psychologist Ulrich Beer wrote: Seldom, certainly, is the psychological portion of an visual aspect in nature so great as it is in the instance of coloring material. No 1 can meet it and remain impersonal. We are instantly, instinctively, and emotionally moved. We have sympathy or antipathy, pleasance or disapproval within us every bit shortly as we perceive colorss. ( Beer 1992, p11 ) Beer has concluded that primary psychological reaction we worlds have toward coloring material. Which psychological science is the scientific discipline that trades with the head, with mental and emotional procedures, with particular mention to behavior, provided it is understood that behavior includes ideas, feelings, and dreams — – anything a individual experiences. These experiences have their roots in witting, subconscious, and unconscious procedures. Coloring material is besides a portion of the witting, subconscious, and an experience that is built-in to human behaviour as we all know coloring material is widely known that coloring material has a really existent consequence on people. The right or incorrect pick of coloring material can do a large difference to the success of your concern and the messages that you are seeking to convey to your prospective clients or clients. While the use of coloring material in different juncture ensuing different result towards the resident that occupies it. For illustration what types of coloring material to utilize for kopitiams decor or furniture to assist increase customer’s satisfaction and dining experience? The pilot of this paper is to analyze how does color interplay between human response in a modern kopitiam to what extent does the coloring material used in a infinite affect the manner the resident feel because coloring material has an consequence on our head, organic structu re and emotions. It affects our temper and can act upon our behaviours and our physical and mental wellbeing as it normally happens subconsciously without us detecting. Chapter 2.0 Defining/Justification of Research 2.1 Define What is Kopitiam? What is Modern Kopitiam? 2.1.1 History A kopitiam is a traditional java store found in the Southeast Asia, chiefly functioning repasts and drinks. The word kopi is a Malay term for java and tiam is the Hokkien term for store. A traditional kopitiam can be found immensely in Malaysia, as it is in Singapore, kopitiams are usually found in about all residential countries every bit good as some industrial and concern territories in the state. Although most are an sum of little stables or stores, some may be reminiscent of nutrient tribunals, but however each stall has similar visual aspect and the same manner of signage. These stores are steeped in tradition and nostalgic memories of a water under the bridge age. Each store has its ain alone spirit and personality, but there are certain similarities shared by most. The ambiance in a kopitiam is unambiguously Malayan, intending that it blends several different civilizations. One similarity is the kopitiam tabular array and chairs. In general, the tabular arraies are marble topped and the chairs are made up of wood with unit of ammunition dorsums. There are other common characteristics of decor that identify this peculiar type of java store, even to person who has ne'er been indoors. The Menu The Kopitiam’s bill of fare typically feature simple nutrient offerings: a assortment of nutrients based on egg, toast, and kaya, plus hot drinks such as java and tea. Food served encompasses Malay, Chinese and Indian civilization and are prepared in the traditional manner to guarantee genuineness and gustatory sensation. Aside from the popular toast and hot drinks, frequenters can taste fortes and local delectations such as chau kuey tiao, curry laksa, nasi lemak, Kopitiam nutrients have become a portion of Malaysia’s culinary heritage, gastronomic bastions proudly enduring the old ages and altering life styles. Visit these old favourites non merely for their culinary offerings, but besides for the history that each serves up. 2.1.2 Development of Kopitiams Traditional Kopitiams The developments of kopitiams are in many ways closely related to the Hainanese migrators. The early Hainanese migrators who came to South East Asia in 1850’s as late migrators, the Hainanese were forced to happen employment in less moneymaking trades. During that period of clip when the Hainanese migrators arrived, the Hokkiens and Teochews, for case were already good entrenched in agribusiness and commercialism trade. Therefore, the Hainanese crafted a niche for themselves in the service sector, by working as cook male childs, servers or retainers in the local hotels, eating houses, bakeshops and bars and as cooks or domestic retainers for the affluent European and Peranakan families. At some point, some of them even work every bit canteen operators in the military base. While some the Hainanese migrators became involve in the kopitiam or ‘coffee shop’ concern as stall holders or helpers. In fact, the Hainanese community has been credited with presenting the kop itiam civilization into Malaysia. Many old Hainanese kopitiam operators recalled that in its olden yearss during the 1950s to 1970s kopitiams were really popular and caters to about everyone around Malaysia but as clip goes by there is a steady diminution in the figure of old manner traditional kopitiams in Malaysia during the twelvemonth of 1980s onwards. For many old manner kopitiam proprietors, their trade ends the minute they retire because a batch of them, their childs have been educated and are non willing to transport on the household concern and besides because of the worsening rate of people sing traditional kopitiams today as the economic system of our state gets better more and more shopping promenades were built and a batch of the younger coevalss no longer willing to see the traditional kopitiam because a batch of the bing kopitiam still uses the really traditional method of running it, ensuing hapless care in some kopitiam that turns off clients who visits particularly the younger coevalss. ( hypertext transfer protocol: //www.bfsmagazine.com.my/index.php? option=com_content & A ; view=article & A ; id=1802: the-revival-of-the-kopitiam-culture- & A ; catid=228: articles & A ; Itemid=1524 ) New Age Kopitiams The popularity of the antique mercantile establishments along with society ‘s compulsion with nostalgia and increasing richness has led to the resurgence of these pseudo-kopitiams as we called modern kopitiam. The resurgence of the traditional civilization started in the early 2000’s with the debut of new age kopitiams. The resurgence of the old kopitiam civilization started in the early 2000s with the debut of new age kopitiams. The new kopitiams are fast-food mercantile establishments which are reminiscent of the old kopitiams in footings of decor, but are normally built in a more modern, hygienic puting such as a shopping promenade instead than in the traditional store house, providing chiefly for immature grownups. Modern kopitiams have retained the antique marble-topped tabular arraies, wooden chairs and chunky dishware, but now they are to be found in the cavernous air-conditioned shopping promenades. City-dwellers are rediscovering kopitiam menu. By and large, aside from the popular local nutrient, the new age kopitiams have a more extended bill of fare which includes a assortment of western culinary art entries. The new age kopitiam is a topographic point where they serves the nostalgic nutrient and drinks that we all still so fond of in a topographic point that exudes the subject of the old-styled java stores while adding some new turns of some comfy couchs and air conditioned country and still pull off to maintain the monetary value right in between the local kopitiam and the java giants. The thought hit it off instantly and now you can see these new age kopitiam distributing like wild fire through the power of franchising. The kopitiam commotion air current swept Malaysia since the center of last decennary and presently kopitiams have ventured abroad into China and Indonesia. This is how the development of the kopi civilization in Malaysia is, from the long standing pasts of kopitiam that our grandparents and their parents used to bask, though now dwindling down from its old glorifications, to the java giants invasion to Malaysia where tonss of young person couldn’t resist, and now to the new age kopitiam that is genuinely Malayan. These newer stores advertise and utilize modern selling patterns every bit good. However, they strive to make an atmosphere similar to that of a traditional store. 2.2 Literature Review 2.2.1 Factors of Visual Impact Towards Our Site in Malaysian Context. Food and drinks plays an of import function in every day’s life and it could be found ubiquitously after the post-industrialisation epoch by the flourishing economic system. Since so, a batch of eating topographic point could be found in Malaysia that offers nutrient and drink to the community about. Due to the economic conditions were improved in Malaysia more and more of people tends to dine out as consumers are sing time-stressed life styles in the favor of dining out alternatively of eating in which causes a deficiency of clip or energy to fix breakfast, tiffin or even dinner with the rapid urbanisation construction that is go oning in Malaysia. Since so, consumer motivations of ingestion had shifted from run intoing our basic nutritionary demands to a more enjoyable experience such as modern kopitiam which had evolve from the really traditional kopitiam we had over the traditional shophouses back yearss in Malaysia. The development of atmospheric eating-places has gained more involvement among kopitiam proprietor to pull clients who seek exceeding and extraordinary topographic points for leisure. This study concluded consumer’s perceptual experiences of the environments that interplay between worlds and their milieus to accomplish a entire antiphonal insides colour consequence. Food and colorss are frequently perceived together with ocular cues as coloring material is non a belongings object, infinites, or surfaces ; it is a esthesis caused by different wavelength received by our eyes. Therefore, coloring material is a wavelength of visible radiation that an object either generates or reflects. Schaie and Heiss note that short-wavelength colorss, what we commonly name the warm colors ( ruddy, orange, and yellow ) , are extremely eliciting ( although non needfully delighting ) even across different age groups and civilizations. While longer wavelength colorss ( blues and leafy vegetables ) have a appeasement loosen uping consequence. These so called cool colorss have been identified as the most pleasant to the bulk of people, whereas xanthous, although arousing, is the least favoured coloring material, particularly when it has a light-green shade. The consequence of coloring material response towards consumers behavioral in modern kopitiam is the major compo nent explored in this paper and this leads to inquiries on how this component supports consumer’s dining experience and to analyze the theory of color look how does it relates of different colorss being used in the interior infinite affect the diner’s behaviour through psychological manifestations like eating behaviour and subjective experiences beside other more physical responses. Decision There are many grounds why things are the coloring material they are, but chiefly it is due to the soaking up and the sprinkling belongingss of the stuff being different from that of the incoming wavelengths of the visible radiation that illuminate it. As a farther illustration: we see green foliages or grass as being green because foliages and grass ( and other green workss ) use Chlorophyll to alter visible radiation into energy. Because of its nature and chemical make-up, Chlorophyll absorbs the blue and ruddy colors of the spectrum and reflects the green. The viridity is reflected back out to the spectator doing the grass and leaves appear green. Following on briefly to how we see color†¦ the rods and cones of the oculus pick up on the peculiar wavelength and frequence of green and direct the message to the encephalon. Similarly a mature tomato is ruddy because it reflects beams from the ruddy terminal of the spectrum and absorbs beams from the bluish terminal.

Abigail’s Party

It could be said that Mike Leigh uses the comic convention of disguises at the end of Act 1 to show Beverly’s change of attitude from her disguise back to her real self. This is shown when Beverly suggests â€Å"[getting] pissed† after having an argument with Laurence. The use of the word â€Å"pissed† as a colloquialism for drunk could be seen as being symbolic of Beverly’s true social class seeping through the performance she continuously puts on throughout the night. This is humorous for the audience as Beverly spends a great deal of time and effort in the first part of Act 1 making sure that she is able to impress guests like Angela and Tony and try to feel in the same social class as Susan. She does this by adding a copy of â€Å"[placing] a copy of Cosmopolitan magazine in the magazine rack† and â€Å"[putting] on a record (Donna Summer: Love to Love you† among other things yet after one small spat shall we say with her husband represses back to having the personality the audience believes she’s trying to hide. Some might also say that Leigh’s use of fools near the end of Act 1 is to create after a very tense moment. An example of this would be after Laurence makes quite a long speech which gives us an idea of his views about people as he says that people often â€Å"just drift through life, without any real aims†. He also describes these people as being â€Å"weak†. Both these points are extremely serious and also quite angry. This means that when Angela tells a story about the time â€Å"[she] went to a party† right after these serious points, the audience feels sorry for Laurence as no one seems to be listening to him, but they also can’t help but laugh at Angela’s complete vacancy of points Laurence was making. This makes Angela a clear example of a natural fool as she has no real knowledge about when she is making an irrelevant point. It could also be said that th e comic convention of foolishness is used when Angela and Beverly doesn’t know when she is saying something inappropriate or hurtful. An example of this would be when they try to reassure Susan about her daughter Abigail’s party but end up doing the exact opposite by Beverly saying that â€Å"teenagers get over-excited† to which Angela add that â€Å"it all starts with one kiss†. This is humorous as while trying to do one thing, Beverly and Angela end up doing the exact opposite without realising it which is a classic example of a natural fool. This part of the play could also be seen as cringe comedy because of the sympathy the audience feels for innocent Susan who has been kicked out of her house by her daughter only to e made to feel even more uncomfortable in Beverly’s house with her continuous points about teenagers and their rumoured carelessness which, including the gin and tonics Beverly gives Susan, causes her to be physically sick at the v ery end of the act. Hypocrisy could be considered to be another comic convention that is shown at the end of Act 1. This is particularly something that Beverly shows more than anyone else as when she is describing teenagers as having â€Å"a drink in one hand, a cigarette in the other [and] they’re having a bit of a dance†.The hypocrisy of this is that Beverly throughout the act is continuously refilling people’s drinks, offering cigarettes to everyone and is described on page 42 as â€Å"[proceeding] to have a dance solo in front of the others†. This is humorous as it makes it plainly obvious that Beverly is a natural fool because she is, in many ways just as childish as the teenagers that were in Susan’s house. This is another case of the audience feeling superior to the characters on stage as they when seeing the play would mostly be middle class and therefore they would also probably not be as childish as Beverly or Angela.Leigh’s uses o f comic conventions are, in my opinion, used to establish a social ladder change between when the characters are first introduced and when the act finishes which is shown with Susan coming to the house with a bottle of red wine and ending up being sick in the toilet. Leigh’s clear use of comic conventions such as hypocrisy is also to breakdown the difference between sophistication and childishness. Mostly though, Leigh uses comic conventions to get the audience to question where they stand on the social ladder and if it really matters in this world.
